Intellectual property is any innovation, commercial or artistic, or any unique name, symbol, logo or design used commercially.  Often known as IP, intellectual property allows people to own their creativity and innovation in the same way that they can own physical property.
Types of Intellectual Property are varied but the most important among them are copyright, trademark and patent.
A patent is the protection provided by the government for an inventor with which he can exclude others from making, using, selling or importing his invention. A copyright is generally the protection for the artistic works as a result of which a creator of such work has the right to exclude others from copying, selling, performing, displaying or making derivative versions of his work. A trademark is a registered mark (a brand name, design, slogan, sound, smell or any other symbol) that is used to identify goods and services.
The type of protection that is provided by each one of these is different and sometimes, quite often, different aspects of a single product can be protected by means of all of these at the same time.
As to Iran, it is noteworthy that shortly after western countries i.e. since the advent of legislation and introduction of modern IP protection concepts, Iran has been active in passing laws to ensure respect of IP rights. Trademark Registration and Patents Act was passed in 1931 and later Iran joined the Paris Convention on Protection of Industrial Property Rights.

In recent years, Iran has been striving to play a more active role in protecting IP rights by joining the Madrid System while implementation of PCT is still pending. As to Iran's application with WTO, it is still pending because of some opposition although Iran is trying to ensure that it complies with WTO norms.
